Tattoo Q&A
Aftercare !
Your Tattoo Journey Begins
So, you’ve searched far and wide for the perfect idea — saving, screenshotting, and refining your vision until you’re finally ready to take the next step. Whether it’s your first tattoo or your fiftieth, it’s completely normal to wonder what happens next.
This guide is here to walk you through the process, answer common questions, and help you feel confident and prepared for your session.
Consultation & Booking
Depending on your design, we highly recommend booking a one-to-one consultation with your artist beforehand. This gives you the opportunity to ask any final questions, refine your ideas, and allows your artist to plan the design specifically for your body. Placement is key — a well-planned tattoo will flow naturally with your anatomy and feel like a part of you.
Once your booking is confirmed, a deposit is taken to secure your appointment, and your tattoo journey officially begins.
In the lead-up to your appointment, it’s important to take care of the area being tattooed. Please avoid sunburn, cuts, or bruising, as this may affect your skin and could result in your appointment needing to be rescheduled. If anything does happen, let your artist know as soon as possible.
Tattoo Placement and Design
Once your consent form is completed, your artist will present your design. This is the perfect time to make any final adjustments — whether it’s sizing, placement, or small design tweaks. Never feel hesitant to speak up; we want you to feel completely confident and happy before we begin. This is your body, and your tattoo is something you’ll carry with you forever.
At the same time, you’ve chosen your artist for a reason — trust in their experience and guidance. Open, respectful communication is key on both sides, allowing us to work together to achieve the best possible result.
Next comes the stencil — one of the most exciting parts of the process. The stencil can be repositioned easily, so you’re welcome to explore different placements until it feels just right.
Take your time to look in the mirror, move naturally, and see how the design sits with your body as it bends and stretches. It can look different depending on movement, which is completely normal — the goal is for the tattoo to flow naturally with you.
Once your tattoo is complete, your artist will cover it with either cling film and medical tape, or a clear medical-grade bandage such as Second Skin or Saniderm. The type of dressing used and how long to keep it on will be explained to you on the day, and you’ll also receive an aftercare guide to refer back to at any time.
If your tattoo is wrapped with cling film, this is usually kept on for around an hour or until you arrive home. You can then remove it and gently clean the area with warm water.
If a clear adhesive bandage is used, follow your artist’s specific guidance. Some recommend removing it after 24–48 hours, while others advise leaving it on for up to 5 days. As a general guideline, we suggest no longer than 4 days.
If the bandage begins to peel, leak, or the tattoo becomes exposed, remove it carefully using warm water. Always ensure your hands are clean before touching your tattoo.
Healing: What to Expect
As your tattoo heals, it’s completely normal to experience some dryness, flaking, or light itching. It’s important not to pick, scratch, or peel the area — even if it becomes tempting — as this can affect the final result.
Avoid fully submerging your tattoo in baths, pools, hot tubs, or ice baths for at least two weeks, as this can interfere with healing and increase the risk of infection.
If you have any concerns at any stage, or if something doesn’t feel quite right, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Open communication is key, and we’re always here to support you throughout the healing process.
No question is ever a silly one — we want both you and your tattoo to heal beautifully… and look just a little bit badass.
Choosing Your Artist
The first step is choosing the right artist for you. It’s important to find someone whose work you genuinely love, but also someone you feel comfortable with. The atmosphere and connection you have with your artist can be just as important as the tattoo itself.
Take the time to look through their portfolio — both healed and fresh work — and make sure their style aligns with what you’re looking for. When you choose the right artist, you’re not just getting a tattoo — you’re creating an experience. One you’ll enjoy, remember, and carry with you.
Preparing for Your Appointment
Preparation starts the day before your session. Think of it like preparing for a procedure — looking after your body will help ensure the best possible experience.
Make sure you:
-
Get a good night’s sleep
-
Stay well hydrated
-
Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours
-
Eat a proper meal
On the day of your appointment, continue to drink plenty of water and have a good breakfast around 1–2 hours beforehand. You’re also welcome to bring snacks and drinks with you, especially for longer sessions.
Taking these steps will help keep your body steady, your skin in the best condition, and make the overall process much more comfortable.
Does it Hurt?
It’s one of the most common questions — and the honest answer is yes, all tattoos involve some level of discomfort. However, it’s very manageable, and most clients find that once they settle in, it becomes much easier than expected.
As your body adjusts, the sensation often becomes less intense, allowing you to relax into the experience. Whether you prefer to chat, listen to music, or bring a book or something to focus on, the time tends to pass more quickly than you’d think.
Everyone copes differently, and whatever helps you feel comfortable is absolutely fine with us. The most important thing is to remain as still as possible during the tattoo to ensure the best result.
If at any point you feel uncomfortable, lightheaded, or need to move, just let your artist know. We’re always happy to pause — a short break, some water, or something sugary is often all you need to feel better.
Aftercare Once the Dressing Is Removed
Once your covering has been removed, your tattoo will still be in the healing stage and will require consistent aftercare.
Gently wash your tattoo using lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial cleanser. Allow it to air dry where possible, or carefully pat dry with clean paper towels to minimise any risk of irritation or infection.
After the first 24 hours following bandage removal, you can begin moisturising. Apply a very thin layer of your chosen aftercare ointment once daily, increasing slightly if your skin feels particularly dry — but avoid over-applying, as the tattoo still needs to breathe.
Most tattoos will appear healed on the surface after around two weeks, but deeper healing continues for several weeks. We recommend continuing light moisturising for 4–6 weeks to support the full healing process.
To keep your tattoo looking its best long-term, always apply a high SPF sunscreen when exposed to direct sunlight. This will help protect the detail, colour, and longevity of your tattoo over time.
Aftercare and Gift Boxes
We offer a carefully selected range of tattoo aftercare products in studio to support your healing process and keep your tattoo looking its best.
Our aftercare options are chosen for their quality and skin-friendly ingredients, helping to soothe, protect, and promote healthy healing. Your artist will guide you on the best product for your tattoo and explain exactly how to use it for optimal results.
Alongside our aftercare, we also offer tattoo gift boxes — perfect for treating yourself or someone else. Each box includes essential aftercare items and thoughtful extras to make the healing process easier, more comfortable, and a little more special.
Whether you’re preparing for your appointment or looking for the perfect gift, our in-studio products are designed to support you every step of the way.
